Sweet Cicely

from 8.00

Myrrhis odorata

Sweet Cicely is a special plant.  Tolerant if not adoring of the shadier nooks in our gardens, this beautiful plant comes up reliably early in the year with a plume of foliage quite like ferns.  It then unveils a huge beautiful set of leaves that spread out to 2 to 3' or so.  Then come the beautiful white flowers that the predatory insects adore so much, then the young seed pods that seriously taste basically exactly like a "Good and Plenty" candy, but without the junk!  The roots are massive, deep, sweet as anything, and all parts are edible.

Please be aware this amazing, useful perennial looks a bit like its cousins the poison and water hemlocks... No joke plants.  So be aware and careful that you are eating our delicious offering, not an interloper.  And share that awareness with your friends and family.

Size:
Sweet Cicely can get to be about 3' tall when it is in full flower, but most of the year it is low and beautiful to the ground.

Site Preference:

Sweet Cicely likes a well drained, shadier, cooler, more moist position.  That's our experience.  Full blast sun and it's a sad sap!
