Plants for Spring 2019 Shipping

NOTE: We’re ‘closed’ for shipping for Spring 2019. We’ll update our inventory for Fall 2019 shipping around Summer Solstice. Check back early July, or look for a newsletter update that we’re open again. Thanks for your patience. We’re a tiny nursery and are trying our best to keep up with the interest and excitement over these wonderful plants!

Your order placed now will be collected, carefully packaged and shipped as bare root plants in the early spring when the ground has thawed but the plants haven’t started actively growing. For our climate this is normally sometime between later March and mid-April… We’ll email you shipping confirmation and tracking details as soon as they ship!

TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…

Allium Fistulosum
This is a very hardy, perennial herbaceous onion family plant that can be used as scallions. The variety we offer came to us as a mysterious seed pack, hand written with ‘Negi’ on it over 6 years ago. The Japanese Negi, Welsh Onion, Bunching Onion, Spring Onion… all names for the same type of plant. We’ve tried other varieties in the past but found their vigor and size to be disappointing. Once we started growing the ‘Negi’ we fell in love! Large, flavorful, vigorous, disease resistant, and very easy to propagate, this is a real winner!

Our best guess is the origin of what we grow is ‘Shimonita Negi’ as it matches the description and size of that type. Given enough space between plants and rich compost soil it can get substantial in size, with a thick white base and long, beautiful hollow stalks. Divisions can be made once established, or seed allowed to form and saved to continue it on at a larger scale. Left on its own, the patch eventually multiplies into what looks like a thick chives patch.

This is an excellent candidate for pairing with young trees and shrubs to protect and provide an early yield as the over story develops.

Ordering provides two options:
’Small Order’ will give you a few small seedlings
’Bundle’ will give you at least 10+ small seedlings or at least 5 larger plants
We try to be generous with our plant material, if we can spare more seedlings you get more! Please be aware that at dormant times of year there is naturally some goo, discoloration, winter damage, etc on the plants. This is normal and they will perk up and be beautiful in no time!

Size:
About 1’ to 2’ tall generally, but can get taller in extremely rich conditions

Site Preference:
Seems tolerant of a very wide number of soils and sites, most production full sun and sweet soil but will live under trees and shrubs.

Hardiness:
At least hardy to zone 5B from our personal experience
