Bare Root Plants for Sale
Thank you for your interest and happy growing!
PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants as an alternative to ordering here and we will work to arrange a pickup.
We update our offerings on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see all plants as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!
Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and Fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring will generally have more herbaceous perennials and grasses, and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find the plants you are looking for this time.
If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!
Please be aware that some plants are considered ‘illegal’ in some states. It is possible that some of our plants are not allowed to be planted where you live. If you are in doubt, you can search the plant and your state and see if it they are prohibited or ‘illegal’ to plant and if so please don’t order them. Thanks.
TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…
Cuttings Flash Sale!
Cuttings Flash Sale!
There are many plants out there that are very willing and able to grow from dormant, hardwood cuttings. Willow, Elderberry and Currants are particularly adept at this and we periodically offer very reasonably priced bundles to make this abundance available to all! Our normal sales windows on March 1st and September 1st offer quite a bit of finer detail and various options for cuttings, but what we’re offering now are extremely reasonably priced bulk cuttings of ‘chef’s choice’ great varieties, all mixed and communally wrapped.
Here are a few ways these cuttings may be an amazing fit for you:
Starting a small scale nursery where you live… Root out and grow these cuttings for a season and have amazing plants you can sell locally.
Building a living wall along a road line or fence row…. You can direct plant or grow for a season and have richly productive plant based walls with many cuttings like these.
Biomass and feed for animals… If you are working with or plan to work with animals in your landscape these plants are wonderful allies in stem and leaf to that goal.
Capture and sequester water… Willow, Elder and Currants are all profoundly competent at drawing up and utilizing excess moisture, all while creating beauty and lovely offerings above ground!
Sharing with friends and neighbors…. Gift to or trade with your family, friends and community beautifully rooted plants they can plant or you can help them plant.
The cuttings we offer are ready to be directly planted in nursery beds upon arrival. With a deep mulch around them and one initial deep watering they can generally take care of the rest themselves and may grow by next fall into 2-3’ or even taller well rooted and field ready plants!
You can visit the specific pages for Willow, Elderberry and Currants to learn more about these plants. When we offer Fig cuttings bundles they are of a diverse mix of our cold hardiest and productive figs, with generally 2-3 or more varieties represented. If you are in a warm/mild climate you can fall plant fig cuttings directly outside upon arrival, other folks may want to pot them up communally and store in root cellar conditions for the winter.
In order to offer cuttings so reasonably priced here we won’t be labeling specific cultivars or be able to fulfill detailed labeling requests. You will get ‘mix packs’ of generally 30 cuttings which are sourced from our very best plants and vary between 4-12” in length, all super viable and ready to root. We aren’t naming exact types, this is about diversity, resilience, a great expansion of amazing plants and VERY reasonable prices.
